David Vetter was born with a disorder called Severe Combined Immune Deficiency Syndrome (SCID). SCID is an underdeveloped immune system where it is basically considered not having an immune system at all. His disorder was known before he was given birth to, and doctors saw this as an opportunity to experiment to learn more about the immune deficiency while hoping to save David’s life. The doctors created a plastic bubble for David to live in after he was born. It was in hopes that he would only be in there for a few months, but his immune system did not develop as quickly as expect. About ten seconds after his birth, he was placed into the bubble in hopes to protect him from the outside world of disease and germs; thus giving birth to the “boy in the bubble”. By taking away the chances of being exposed to these outside factors, there was a chance that David would be able to live his life past infancy. Although the doctors plan was supposed to save David’s life, it deprived the boy from living his life; and in the end, decided his fate of having only lived a young, twelve years. The original plan was not to keep David in the bubble for the rest of his young life, but to try to save it. The doctors rushed David into the bubble in hopes to do a bone marrow …show more content…
But, the fear that was instilled in him from day one about getting sick was too impactful on his life. David only ever took 6 trips outside the bubble in the suit. After this development was somewhat unsuccessful, all of the doctors that were keeping ultimately alive were leaving the project. Even David saw the end drawing closer and closer. But, with new developments in science, there was a glimpse of hope that there could be a happy ending for David. By using his sisters bone marrow, there was a way to “kick start” David’s immune
