Dachau is located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions near the medieval town of of Dachau. Bavaria which is located in Southern Germany, which opened on March 22,1933. Dachau was the first regular concentration camp established. Dachau served as a prototype and model for other Nazi concentration camps that followed. Almost every community in Germany had members taken away to these camps.
From 1943, more than 100 subsidiary camps were built. Thousands were killed through forced labor and typhus epidemic. Dachau concentration camp was liberated by American troops on April 29,1945. At that time the camp was crammed with 32,000 inmates. Dachau was the first and longest operating Konzentrationslager.

The most famous priest at Dachau was Leonard Roth who was a prisoner from 1943-1945. On June 22,1941, Russian prisoners of war were sent to Dachau.
Throughout its 12 year history, Dachau was a camp for non-Jewish adult mates. The few women who were sent to Dachau lived with German families in the town of Dachau and and worked as servants. In 1944, Jewish women were brought to Dachau from Hungary. Prisoners at Dachau and other Nazi concentration camps were badges which indicated their classification. Dachau was never a camp that was specifically intended for murdering the Jews.
In January 1941, Dachau was designated a class I camp. 150 Dachau inmates were forced to participate in medical experiments. On April 29,1945 there was 2,539 Jews in the main camp including 225 women. In April 1942, at the same time that the Jews were being sent to the death camps in east, a new brick building was planned for the Dachau camp.
