Animals used in circuses spend most of their lives chained inside boxcars and never get to live without restrictions. In zoos, animals often live in enclosures or cages that are many times smaller than their homes in the wild. In marine parks like SeaWorld, orcas are given what is, all in all, a concrete bathtub to live in. Elephants are clever, considerate, and affectionate animals. They have the largest brains of any land animal. They care about each other and can become depressed when they are separated, regularly crying out for lost friends or family members. They’re not given the chance to do what is natural to them, like running, roaming, choosing a partner, and being with their families. Lions and tigers typically live in cages that hardly have sufficient room for them to turn around. Can you visualize being removed from your family, and forced to live the rest of your life in a concrete bathtub, cage or enclosure?

At SeaWorld, these bright, sympathetic animals are confined in a tank. An orca at SeaWorld would have to swim the perimeter of the main pool 1,900 times in one day for it to equal to the same distance that they would in the wild. The trauma of captivity declines their immune systems, triggering them to die prematurely even though they are sheltered from predators. (Vet News, 2014, n.p). Even taking away the animal’s predators and having care at hand from their living facility these animals are dying earlier than they would in the wild. Showing the negative effects, it has on animals who are made to live in captivity. They thrive in their biological environment but when taken out of that habitat, it is a death sentence to a short-restricted
