Bilinguals vary drastically in terms of social interaction, cognitive and educational abilities as well as linguistic techniques. The influence bilingualism has on the human mind, therefore, needs be studied based on the contextual evidence and not as a category in which all bilingual people fall into. Despite this, however, we have begun to understand how bilingualism shapes the human mind and research examining the way in which bilingual people process language has demonstrated that both languages are activated whenever a person listens, reads or speaks one language. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that being bilingual is a great advantage in terms of social interaction in children as well as nonverbal communication, specifically microexpression recognition.
It is based on my research on bilingualism as well as several of my psychology classes at USD that I have developed a great passion for the topic. Following my career as an undergraduate student, I plan on attending graduate school to further prepare myself for a career in psychology. I plan to conduct research on how bilingualism affects children in order to provide for them an education that takes into consideration their specific needs and
