One way to create a sonic tractor beam is using loudspeakers. The Universities of Sussex and Bristol did just that. Using a high pitched and high intensity sound to surround the object. It created an acoustic force field. The sonic tractor beam uses a timed sequence of sound waves, that create a low pressure area. The area traps the object and sound waves can be used to manipulate the object. The size of the low force region depends on the length of the …show more content…
When light waves are fired at an object they tend to bounce off, creating radiation pressure that pushes the object away. Dr. David Grier and his colleagues started to work with using light to pull things. The way they did this was by creating a hologram that had bright and dark regions in a pattern. The particles would be drawn into the bright regions. Optical tweezers as they are called, use the buffeting of photons to focus light beams to push or pull particles. It mainly depends on the beams of light are focused. “When a stream of light hits an object, it tends to move in the direction that the light is. However, some recent research has shown that with the right geometries, small microparticles can move in the opposite direction of the stream of photons.”
