Introduction

The area of Alcatraz Island was first explored by a Spaniard Juan Manuel de Ayala back in 1775. He named the island as Isla de los Alcatraces which was later called Alcatraz in English. The US army built a fortress in the island in 1850s and in 1868, it became a military prison. In 1909, most of the fortress was destroyed and new prison was built called “The Rock”. This work of building new prison was done by the prisoners themselves.

Through a single independent clause, it is simply stated Hester is no longer confined in prison. However, her freedom is not that simple, due to her decision to stay in the community she is still confined within the puritan model of society. The syntax here used signifies that Hester being free from the prison is a small action and simple in the grand scheme of things. This could be useful when choosing whom to punish rather than punishing the whole prison. Alcatraz also had more interaction with people compared to the Supermax prisons where there is very minimal if any interaction between inmates (Ward & Kassebaum, 2009). Interaction between inmates could help greatly with the mental problems inmates are leaving the Supermax prisons with. The inmates at Alcatraz left the prison and succeeded in their life after imprisonment (Ward & Kassebaum, 2009).…
