Grace and Frankie The story of Grace and Frankie begins as both of the women meet for lunch. On edge and acting as if they like one another, the two women wait for their husbands to arrive. Running a little late—the husbands arrive to announce ‘big news.’ Grace and Frankie expect “the next big step in their lives…” to be their husbands retirement. However, little to their surprise, the big news is Sol and Robert are gay and haven cheated for more than twenty years! The women become outraged and the men continue to inform them that they plan to get married and live openly as a couple, since they can now freely do so. The women both have different reactions about the news and handle their emotions on two different sides of the spectrum. So, within the television series we are discussing now, we see Grace as the typical “fake wife.” Before we jump to any conclusions, I don’t mean she is a fake person and is full of plastic surgery; no, what I mean is she puts on a persona to get by. She wears fake eyelashes, hair extensions, even face lift tape! She tries to hide and put on a front and portray to others that she was happy, she even tried to convince herself that she was happy. When we watch Grace take off the make-up at home and look in the mirror and Robert walks into the room and asks her if she was ever truly happy, she takes a deep breath, and says “I was happy enough.” Grace goes on to explain that she thought this is the lifestyle everyone lived, that they get comfortable, and even if they aren’t truly happy, they are at least “happy enough.” She pretended to live up to the lifestyle she thought everyone else has; that is the ‘fake’ I am explaining right now; sometimes in life people settle, Grace
