I remember the first time I sat in a wheel chair. I was about 8 years old and I discovered this chair on wheels, thinking “oh my god I can not wait to ride myself around”, folded at the side of my grandmothers corridor. I could not have opened and sat in the chair fast enough before she caught me, yelling “Marina get off that chair! its not a toy.” At the time I felt disappointed; disheartened that I could not move myself around in what I thought was a cool fun chair that only lucky people got to ride in. At the time I did think it was a toy and was inticed by a new way to move around. What I did not know was really how unlucky the person who had to use this chair really was and how fortunate I was to not need it. Why didn’t I need it? Because I can move all on my own. Being able to move your body efficiently is vital to living a productive life and if that movement is impaired, accomplishing everyday tasks can become difficult. An example of a wheel chair can illustrate how limited life can be if successful movement cant be made. Reaching for the pasta on the top shelf, taking a walk to the store to buy fruit, or taking a shower by yourself can not be done if you can no longer move your legs. Where does one go if movement is impaired? A physical therapist, because when the most important thing is taken away from you, that is your independence, you are willing to take advice and care from a movement specialist.
