Living in a generation where we have the technology today can be used for a lot of good purposes. It can be used as a faster way to find information, it’s a new learning style for students, and it’s used to communicate with people who aren’t around, are in different states, countries, etc. However, despite all of that, it is also used in many bad ways. The three main reasons that will be discussed is the negativity of social media, racism, and distraction.
One reason why I believe technology’s power is being corrupted is how social media is being used negatively. Many people will use instagram, twitter, or any social media platform and use it as way to hurt someone. Or in other words, cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a serious matter because it not only affects the person’s mental/emotional health but about 43% of students who are in this situation, have it happen to them more than once. Worse part of it is, most of them don’t even tell an adult. For that reason being because they fear that it might get worse or the person cyberbullying them will eventually confront them face to face.

Now this ties into the whole cyberbullying situation, mainly because there are cases of racism and cyberbullying both being used. However, racism is more directed to your ethnicity which in my opinion is more personal. For example, as a Filipino, I get asked if I eat dog, which is not only racist but very stereotypical. According to an article called, “Anti-social media: study finds amount of racist tweets sent per day”, about 10,000 racist tweets are sent a day. The most used term in these tweets was “white boy” and the N-word. The article also stated that, “They found that as few as 100 tweets each day—one every 15 minutes—contained language that could be interpreted as threatening violence or offline
