We walked up to the roof. He gave me a hug. Why? He handed me a folded up note, the paper wrinkled and yellow. He smiled at me. What was going on? He walked away from me, closer and closer to the edge. “I love you,” he whispered. And he was gone.
Before I could fully realize what was happening, I was dialing 911 into my phone. A man picked up. My voice shook as I said the words. “M-my b-b-brother. He j-j-jumped off the roof. A couple s-seconds ago. H-h-h-he might be dead.” I told the man our address and he hung up. I ran down the brown staircase, screaming at the top of my lungs. My mother saw me running, immediately hanging up the phone. She was probably talking to one of her friends. Laughing, making jokes about how Mark and I fought

It’s Mark. H-h-he…” “What is it? Honey? I have to get back to work. Just say it.” “Mom….” “What?? You’re wasting my time!” “He jumped off the roof. I called 911.” What I saw in her eyes was terrifying. Her entire face sunk down, making her look years older that she was. Her pupils shrunk, leaving a small dot of black in her bright, blue eyes. Her lip twitched and tears fell onto her cheeks. She said nothing. The pain was so much that words couldn’t save her from it.

His funeral passed by with no words. I just watched the priest speak fondly of Mark. Of course, he was one of his favorite religious students. I watched my mom choke up and cry until she left the room. I watched my dad sit firmly, but break down when his suicide note was read aloud. The note he gave to me. ----------- A few days later, I was cleaning out his drawers. After all, no one else would. My mother hid in her room, shielding herself with a warm blanket, and my father buried himself in work, spending late nights at the law firm and going out with colleagues. I was the only sane one.
