Patrick Henry’s Urgency and Patriotism Patrick Henry is a patriotic politician who strongly feels that America should become defensive against the British in the events leading up to what develops into the American Revolution. In this particular oration, “Speech in the Virginia Convention,” Henry speaks with the intent of creating a sense of urgency and encouraging patriotism among the American people. Pathos, powerful diction, and repetition enable Henry to successfully convince a majority to form a Virginian militia and generally treat the British as an enemy. A vital part of the success of Henry’s address is its incorporation of repetition and passionate diction; these two elements work together to create a sense of urgency in the people…

In passing time with the folks at the taverns, Henry V, also known as Prince Hal, learns how to communicate with people from all walks of life. In his speech he gets the crowd started by making them feel equal. They are outnumbered so he talks to them not to be so nervous and to fight for your country. I will be writing three ways he talk to the people and made them feel equal. “If we are mark’d die, we are now to do our country loss: and if to leave the few men, the greater share of honour.”…

It seems as though King was hopeful that this letter would reach a more general audience, and gain sympathy from new-found supporters. However, we can be certain of his intention to prove wrong the clergymen to which he addressed his letter. The only possible negative effects of this piece of writing is that the audience is forced to make a decision based only on their judgement of Dr. Martin Luther King’s credibility, because there are no hard facts supporting his claims. At this point we have come to understand audience as it applies to the concepts of genre and rhetorical situation.…

Allusion is very adequate because it concedes the audience to build reciprocity in their consciousness. The reason he does this is to state openly the injustices history had through time and how it is repeating again, like when he mentioned Birmingham and its fraudulent laws. He displays satire of Birmingham and braces the debate of honorable and dishonorable law: “We can never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was “legal” and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was “illegal.” It was “illegal” to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany”. King is not frightened for saying the truth.…

One of the film’s characters that I will be talking more in depth about is the Duke of York, also known as King George Vl. This character in the film impressed me because although at times he wanted to give up on his speech therapy he kept pushing on. In the end of the film he gave an outstanding speech. I was very impressed because he made so much progress from his first speech, you never would have known that he had a stammer if you did not hear him speak prior to that speech he gave announcing the war on Germany and Adolf Hitler. King George Vl had many good qualities such as being a genuinely good, caring person.…

His verb choices help form influential phrases that are powerful enough to appeal to the heart, thus, creating a more emotional connection to the speech. (“…wallow in the valley of despair” [King]). Kennedy’s Inaugural Address has good usage of these rhetoric devices, but compared to King’s speech it appears lackluster.…

He starts off very indignant and contrary towards our involvement but ends the speech on a hopeful note. He is extremely clear in stating that although he believes we are making a mistake in battling over our differences, he is optimistic we can grow and learn from this experience that violence is never the answer. In the beginning, King’s tone was accurately described as indignant as he states, “Five years ago he said (JFK),’Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.’ Increasingly, by choice or by accident, this is the role our nation has taken, the role of those who make peaceful revolution impossible by refusing to give up the privileges and the pleasures that come from the immense profits of overseas investments… We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society”.…
