The doors swing open, the sound of screaming, giggling, unzipping of jackets and thumping of little feet, cease the prior quiet Monday afternoon. It’s a typical day in Pleasant Grove church; the Greatminds program has just begun. Brianna and Mayonne run in with glowing smiles and open arms. They embrace Erica and I, an embrace similar to one given to a friend that has not been seen in months; yet just last Monday we all went pumpkin picking. The activity room is filled with more children, as Manny, Treasure, Hector, Trinity, Deondre, Lamayaa, and Jenny come piling in.

As children, growing up in Los Angeles, they faced poverty and an environment replete with violence. I became a volunteer for Greatminds to aid children living in low-income households; children who endure similar struggles that my parents once had.

Greatminds has displayed that I can help and change someone’s life, and even though I have only aided Hector this experience has shown me that I can help more people in the

I’ve always thought about helping others so they can have the same benefits that I have today, if it’s just to speak out or even not to feel discouraged because you walk in somewhere and people look at you because you're a different skin color. By my junior year I was able to do that by notifying the people in the community about this big issue. The task was to go around the San Fernando community to pass out flyers and inform them about immigrants rights. While doing this, I learned the skills of speaking to a stranger about issues that still concern us today. Going to the first house was terrifying, stepping into those first steps and speaking to a stranger in the morning that doesn’t want to be interrupted was going to be difficult.…

I was first dubbed “an intelligent young lady” in my second round of first grade, which seemed incredibly ironic. Just the previous year I was hiding my red face in shame as the principal of my private school finally told my parents I didn 't know how to read. “It’s not your fault, honey, they just didn 't know how to help you,” my mother said to me gently, running her fingers tenderly through my hair. My father, on the other hand, relayed an angry drunken lecture to me almost every night about how that crappy school stole all of his money.…
