I sit quietly as she yells at me for being late and making her wait; though in reality, it has only been a few seconds since school has ended. My grandmother, a stout 75 year old woman, has been the source of my childhood nightmares from the moment I could understand her. To her, I am the origin of the family problems; from the disappearance of my father to the struggle my mother had to face as a single parent, I done nothing but be a burden. As we approach our destination her words becoming increasingly harsher. She drops me off, and I wait for my mother to return. “I am riding the bus home from now on.” At first I did not know what to fear more, riding the bus or facing my grandmother again. I spend hours researching bus fares and the process of bus riding, as this is the only thing that assuages me. Though deciding to ride the bus was based off of a whim, I realize the affordability of my option and decide to follow through due to my family’s financial situation. Taking a look at the grandmother, it is important to note her namelessness, because this characteristic signifies a deeper symbolic meaning. The story begins, “The grandmother didn’t want to go to Florida” (1). There are three unnamed characters in the story: the grandmother, the children’s mothers, and The Misfit. Throughout, the grandmother is referred to by her title in place of her name, which allows the reader to see the grandmother as an illustration of the typical person. Because of her namelessness, she comes to represent everyone, and her external and internal conflicts with vanity, control, and egotism represent the collective of humanity’s struggles.…

Moving schools away from all of my friends should’ve been an appalling experience, surprisingly, it was a blessing in disguise. I went to Agnes Baptist Elementary from kindergarten to 5th grade and I had friends that I've known since I was 3. I loved it there and knew the school like the back of my hand. Everything was superior, like most good things, though there were times where they weren’t, I was harassed by a bully almost everyday, my grades were getting inadequate, and my mom didn’t want me to be a sad, disconsolate 7th grader at a new junior high. In the result, I moved and I went to Savage Middle School, a school that had 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.…
