I play on the women's collegiate softball team at St. Thomas University. I have been playing softball since I could walk and, along with every other athlete, my dream is to play on the biggest and brightest stage possible. For softball that is the NCAA College World Series. Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to make millions of dollars playing professional softball like many other professional athletes. This is it for me because college is the highest level of softball I will play in my life and I don't want to settle at a school where I know my athletic ability and hard work could get me so much further.…

The Katherine Trewhitt Scholarship would impact my life by showing me my potential and helping me avoid debt. I see a massive part of transitioning from a child to an adult is learning to be independent. From my point of view, independence is found through hard work and responsibility. This gateway into adulthood is found when a student begins applying for colleges and scholarships. Applying for scholarships takes a considerable amount of time and effort, thus making it a challenge to see if through the years a student has learned to work hard and be responsible.…

Throughout our lives as adolescents we are asked “what do we want to become?” I have contemplated what I wished to do with my life for quite a while and I was inspired by constants in my life ever since I was little. I remember always having a pet by my side to comfort me when I was unhappy and play with me when I was alone. The catalyst for my decision was whenever I lived on a busy street with cars constantly speeding through every day. One sunny day I went to the car to retrieve something from the car with my pug by my side.…

Essay I am grateful for this opportunity to apply for the Viola B. Wilson Endowed Scholarship and the John S. Staley Memorial Fund scholarships. Scholarship opportunities have been of particular importance to me; I paid for my undergraduate education primarily on my own and will be paying for my graduate schooling on my own as well. While I am asking for financial help, my work ethic and commitment to education are a strong part of who I am. Growing up, it was my responsibility to pay for things that I wanted, and my parents provided me with work opportunities around the house to earn the money.…

Every day, my generation is bombarded with the new statistics and burdens of college expenses. The cost of college is becoming an ever-looming weight, shared by almost all students. The Forty Acres Scholars Program would help relieve this burden, and allow me to focus my attention on changing the world (and not on how to pay my next student loan installment). For example, though I've listed my desire to develop earlier computer science exposure, I also have a secret obsession with space exploration. As our population continues booming (currently at a rate of 250 people per minute), it is painfully obvious that our Earth will be unable to sustain the human race.…

I decided when I was 8 years old that I would build my future with my own two hands. Throughout my life I've always had to work harder than everyone else because of my upbringing in both a Mexican and low-income household. However, I have always wanted to have a better life, not only for myself, but for my family, as well. My father gave some advice when I was still young which was “Si no quieres trabajar como un burro toda tu vida, estudia,” which translates to ‘if you do not want to work all your life like a donkey, then study’. His advice is resonating with me as if he said it yesterday.…
