They made the aircraft so it would catch some heavy winds that blew. Plus, they needed light weight materials so the plane wouldn't fall from the sky. But they did tweak it so it could be controlled. That's where the engine and propellers come in. They launch the craft's thrust. Their plane has a very unique design.

Nevertheless, their plane was basically a glider, although it may have been easier to control due to the propellers and the engine. The only thing that was fueling this thing was gravity. Those Wright Brothers wanted to save money so they literally just put an open gas tank above

The brothers catapulted to the front of aviation innovation; the names Orville and Wilbur Wright became known world-wide, and the brothers were celebrated as heroes in the United States. All of this praise couldn’t last forever, though, and soon Orville and Wilbur encountered issues with the patenting and proof of legitimacy of their flying method. In his first book, John Wilkins wrote "Yet I do seriously and on good grounds affirm it possible to make a flying chariot in which a man may sit and give such a motion unto it as shall convey him through the air. And this perhaps might be made large enough to carry diverse men at the same time, together with food for their viaticum and commodities for traffic. It is not the bigness of anything in this kind that can hinder its motion, if the motive faculty be answerable thereunto. We see a great ship swims as well as a small cork, and an eagle flies in the air as well as a little gnat". (John Wilkins from A Discourse Concerning a New World and Another Planet, book 1, 1640).…

The Wright brother’s entrance into aviation history were humble and did not attract a great deal of attention at the time. Quite contrary to the picture most people have of the first flight, the first eyewitness account of the flight was not published until 1905. Even then its first appearance was in an obscure article, Gleanings in Bee Culture. The first publication of significance that would acknowledge the Wrights’ achievement was the Scientific American that confirmed in late 1906, that they had, actually achieved flight. The reason for the delay in recognizing what the Wrights accomplished in 1903 is generally thought to be from the fact that the press at the time treated attempts at a powered flight as being more for humor than anything…
