We were warming up playing basketball and if someone didn’t make it you had to start sprinting for the ball. Well I wasn’t really interested in the game because I was talking to my friends. Then the coach was running by me and so he made use get in the game. Still I wasn’t in the game because I was tired and didn’t want to do anything. Then my friend got the ball and so I started playing. He shot and missed so I went for the ball. Nobody was around and out of nowhere a teammate comes out of the air onto my shoulder. My dad had obviously knew it also because his face was not very happy. When we got home I was laid in my bed passed out. I was out of school for about 3 days and when I got back I had figured out that everybody thought I was okay and fine. They had no clue how bad it was. The Chosen, the novel by Chaim Potok follows the lives of two Jewish boys, Danny Malter and Reuven Saunders, set in Brooklyn, New York, during the time of World War II. A common paradoxical theme found in this novel is that through one’s loss there is also one’s gain. A quote from Reuven’s father, David Malter states this paradox perfectly; “No one knows he is fortunate until he becomes unfortunate” (Potok 87). To me this means you don’t realize what you have until it is gone or taken away from you. There are many examples of this found in the novel and also some examples of this I can relate to my own life.…
