Wren: A Fictional Narrative

Wren trekked up the hill, farther and farther, her feet becoming heavy with every step. The bodies littered the floor around her, and plenty more fell down as if they were rain. The loss would be unbearable, but there was no other choice. She wasn’t doing this for the King, or for his bastard wife, but for the people. They had lived in silence for too long. Wren continued on, trails of blood staining the grass below.

No one attacked her. The soldiers were too busy fighting amongst themselves to notice her small figure. Or maybe it was out of fear – she wasn’t quite sure.

She could see the cave entrance over the horizon now. It was surrounded by trees, and covered by rocks, unnoticeable to the naked eye. Wren’s heart hammered faster as she drew nearer. The rescue would have to be quick and swift, otherwise they wouldn’t make it out.

She put a hand on the rock wall, and closed her eyes. She searched for him, but all she could feel was the darkness surrounding her. She focused harder, using more of her energy. Wren thought about the first time she’d seen him. She thought about his smile, and the glimmer in his eyes. The way his face lit up when he way flying.
