Effect of Staff Nurse Education Intervention on Wound Infections in
Adult Patients after Open Heart Surgery
Wound infections can occur in adult patients who have open heart surgery, whether via bacteria or virus. According to the Hussain, Mannan, and Ali (2012), “sternal and mediastinal infection is a serious complication of cardiac surgical procedures performed

The risk factors for sternal wound infection for new reoperation are related to breast tissues in the female. The study in this article described multiple diseases related to sternal wound infection and evaluated the influence of CDC rating on the management (Dubert, et al., 2015). The design was a randomized clinical trial. The independent variable was an infection control team. The dependent variable was sternal wound infection and mediastinitis endocarditis. However, in another study, male sex is one of the “predictors of sternal and mediastinal infection in cardiac surgical patients” (Hussain, et al., 2012, p. 70). According to Hussain, et al., (2012), “the reason for male sex as an independent predictor is unclear. It may be that males tend to have increased tension on their sternal incision, which in turn leads to increased risk of sternal instability” (p. 71). This study was to identify the hazard factors for sternal and mediastinal infection in a group of heart surgical clients. It was also to analyze the results of recovery with secondary accretion (Hussain, et al., 2012). The design was randomized clinical trials. The independent variable is “secondary intention in cases were re-closure does not hold” (Hussain, et al., 2012, p. 70). The dependent variables are a sternal and mediastinal infection. It implemented via median …show more content…

No plagiarism detected In conclusion, early ambulation is extremely beneficial to the postoperative cardiac patient in several ways. Patient’s experience a shorter length of stay, fewer postoperative complications (i.e pneumonia/ deep venous thrombosis), and a fewer readmission rate for a 6-month period. Patients experienced less back pain, vascular complications (like DVT), urinary discomfort, and they had an overall better well-being perception. By shortening the length of stay, we decrease the risk of hospital acquired infections, delirium, and many other hospital acquired issues.…

As some of you know, I will undergo open heart surgery on February 15, 2016. During this surgery, the doctors will try to repair all of my congenital heart defects. This should prevent me from having a heart transplant in the near future, as well as avoid other serious health related issues I have faced in the last few months. The surgery is supposed to start early in the morning, around 8 am, EST, and if things go well I should be out of the operating room by the afternoon. Contrary to the opinions of my previous cardiologist and surgeon, who were very pessimist with regard to my diagnosis and prognosis, the current doctors actually believe I may have a chance.…

We are simply trying to utilize the community resources to help administer a level of understanding to help eliminate the many possible reasons surgical site infection could occur. Communication is essential not only for liability, but to also give the patient any and all possible outcomes that may arise. The health care profession is one built on a system of checks and balances, and in the perfect world these conditions would not occur. The facility would have a hard time discussing just how the condition of the surgical site infection…

I feel that this is an experience that every student in healthcare should go through. One of the most important observations that I made concerns the various procedures of preventing infections in the operating room. The prevention majorly focuses on the patient, especially when considered the patient has open sounds during the operating process. At times, the practitioners tend to forget the importance of cleaning their hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based cleaners when interacting with the environment (Scott, Earl, Leaper, Massey, Mewburn, Williams, 1999). Notably, the assumption that the practitioner does not need to clean hands simply because they have gloves is misplaced, and it is often overlooked (Weber, Anderson, &Rutala, 2013; Karki& Cheng, 201)).…

Aortic graft infection is rare and carries a poor prognosis. The conventional managements for prosthetic graft infection are surgical debridement, removal of the infected graft, and reconstruction with the new graft prosthesis. However, these approaches are not feasible for some patients with anatomical difficulty of excision or severe comorbid medical illnesses. We report a case of aortic prosthetic graft infection treated successfully with long term antibiotics without surgical intervention.…

Health care-acquired infection (HCAI) is a foremost problem for patient safety and its surveillance. Prevention of HCAI has got to be the first main concern for settings and institutions dedicated to making health care safer. The impact of HCAI implies extended hospital stay, long-term disability, increased antimicrobials resistance of microorganisms, massive extra economic load, high expenses for patients and their families, and excess mortalities ( Boyce J., 2009). In the USA, 10%, or 2 million, patients a year become infected (HCAI), with the annual cost ranging from $4.5 billion to $11 billion. The most frequent type of infection hospital-wide is urinary tract infection (36%), followed by surgical site infection (20%), and bloodstream infection and pneumonia (both 11%)(World Health Organization, 2009).…

Introduction/Review of Literature Introduction Hospital acquired infections (HAI), also known as healthcare associated infections or nosocomial infections, are infections transmitted to patients while in a hospital or other healthcare facility. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015), there were approximately 722,000 patients suffering from hospital acquired infections in the United States in 2011 of whom 75,000 suffered fatalities. Accordingly, hospital acquired infections accounted for more deaths in 2011 than the 32,367 fatalities from motor vehicle accidents combined with the 41,374 fatalities from breast cancer in 2011 (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014, September; U.S Department of Transportation,…
