This financial situation has caused us to be very careful about how money is spent and saved. This dictation of money has led me to volunteer as I feel that no one should be excluded from any activity simply because money is an issue. I feel that the quality of the person is more important than the amount of money that they have.

I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

    1. Going into missions week I was filled with excitement. Going to the Dominican Republic is something I’ve looked forward to since my first year at Hickory Grove. Every year you hear how the DR changed the students who went. There is a famous saying among the people who have gone on the Dominican trip, “I went with intentions of changing/helping the people yet the people seemed to change/help me,” and that was something I was looking forward to experiencing.…

In this contribution I partnered with the Christ Fellowship organization. It is a Christian organization which has churches all over Miami and has a positive impact in the community. It was an opportunity that was given to me because they needed encouraging students who were willing to help and go the extra mile for their community. I wanted to partner with this organization because I felt like I knew what those low income families needed and could provide them with the best. I had already visited some families with my mom that is a social worker and got to witness what their true necessities…

Integrity is a big word for a little girl. It’s a word that my family has shown me, taught me, and helped me understand. Growing up in a religious household I was expected to behave correctly and to do the right thing. Honesty was key and if I wasn’t honest to my mother and father, I didn’t hear the end of it. Having strong morals was also important because it formed the personality that I now have.…

Following a night out with friends, I passed by a large biker from town who was beating up a petit local college student and shouting anti-gay slurs at him. There were no other people around and I was not sure if the surrounding buildings were business or apartments, because I do not venture to this side of the city often. Unfortunately, I accidently left my cell phone at the club. I did have a couple drinks, but in no way am I intoxicated or impaired. I do know that my car is parked just about half a block up the road and further down the road a couple of miles is a police department.…
