We are who we are today because of learned behaviors, core values, and principles. This is all taught to us at a young age mostly by our parents. Assumptions influencing knowledge of intercultural communication
Assumption is defined in the dictionary as “a thing that is assumed to be true”
It is normal to make assumptions day to day. We need to understand that most of our knowledge is based on opinion rather than researched and studied concepts. We don’t exactly check out our assumptions we make every day, casing us to then to place unnecessary and untruthful things in our minds. When we make assumptions about others we may be laying a flawed foundation for our understanding of the relationship. If we don’t truly understand others perspectives and culture, how can we communicate? We would be thinking in our own culture the whole time. It’s an unfair process and very selfish. Americans take this stereotype the most as we think English is the only language that matters. This is why it is so difficult for us to communicate.
