Worldview In My Family

Superior Essays
Worldview is defined in our textbook as “a psychological perception of the environment that determines how we think, behave, and feel” (Mio, 2012). Our worldview within our family consists of family roles, emotional expression, interdependence, power, communication styles, subsystems, rules, myths, and rituals. Each person has his or her own experiences in their lives that shape their worldview, and their family plays a large part in this. I have always considered my family to be what is considered normal compared to other families. I’ve learned, however, that normal varies from person to person and worldview to worldview. Normal aspects of my life could be considered outrageously strange to someone sitting right next to me in my Multicultural Psychology class.
The roles in my family have altered greatly over the years. For the first thirteen years of my life I lived with no siblings. During this time, the roles were pretty typical. I had a mother and a father who I lived with, and I played the role of the only child. When my younger brother, Logan, was born, the roles shifted slightly. Now, instead of being the only child, I was a big sister. My parents’ roles remained the same, but I took on a new role and the role of a younger brother was introduced into our family.

We are each gone all day to either work or school, so once we’re all home we eat supper together and spend a couple of hours just relaxing and watching television or something. Family dinner has never been the kind of thing where children eat in their room and ignore the parents. My mom and dad have always insisted that we all eat together with the television off. After dinner, my mom and I clear the table and then we just spend time together. This is a ritual that I am grateful for. I enjoy that time with my family because we honestly don’t get too much of it these days with as busy as life

Life needs foundational assumptions and framework of guiding principles to provide thinking with a basic stability, shape and structure. A worldview is the way an individual or group perceives the world around them and the beliefs they have. The beliefs that form a worldview are often developed upon a system of beliefs that relate to one another. There are many forms of beliefs an individual has when forming a world view. Beliefs that can be slightly changed and not affect the belief immensely are known as peripheral beliefs. For example, if a known celebrity who is believed to be a generous charity giver, lives in Iceland, this is information that isn’t very important to us, if they move to Toronto the next day, it does not affect the belief that they are a good person.…

My worldview has been shaped and evolved over the time in my life by my beliefs, values, and my experience. In addition, influence has mainly impacted on how I viewed on the world such as in human nature and attitudes. Initially, when I was a young child, I thought that the world was flat based on what I was taught about Christopher Columbus and his theory in school. I was so “conditioned” with the same routine on the daily basis with my homelife with my family and school with my peers to the point I did not think there was more to life on this earth. In other words, I did not think “outside of the box”.…

My worldview stems from Nash's definition which says, "A worldview, then is a conceptual scheme by which we consciously or unconsciously place or fit everything we believe and by which we interpret and reality (Nash 92). Consciously, my interpretation of my reality places me in a world that socially deems my skin color with negativity. In other words, my skin color makes me a minority, not numerically or by population, but as a weaker and less important creation. As a result, I place a high emphasis on social justice and debunking the myth of single stories and narratives.…

For centuries humans have struggled with the complexity and ambiguity of our humanity. The first understanding of humanity is based on every person’s own definition of the worldview that each individual holds. How an individual is raised up contributes to the development and the construction of one’s worldview. And vice versa, worldview also plays a huge role in shaping how one perceives and appraises their surroundings. Likewise, I base my worldview on my experiences from living in the culture and the environment that I grew up in.…

According to the United Nations Food Program, approximately 795 million people in the world are starving, and 3.1 million children a year, under the age of five, die from poor nutrition alone. These statistics make me feel guilty about my eating habits. I realized how often I resort to premade foods that are offered on every street corner, and at grocery stores. I have access to healthy organic nutritious food, but I passed that up in order to save time. I live a very busy fast paced life, and having premade food at my fingertips at all times makes it easy to eat on the go.…
