World War Z Essay On Fear

Fear is an emotion that leads people to do things they would not normally do. It awakens a sector of a personality they never knew they had. A major recurring theme in World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War is fear as a driving force. Fear leads to insanity, inhumanity, and unity. In most wars, fear is liability that burdens both sides. If one side is able to capitalize on the fear of their opponents, this may give them the upper hand. However, when one side happens to be the living dead, conveniently incapable of feeling any emotions, the entire game changes. Trying to “out-scare” the other side loses its effect. General Travis D’Ambrosia makes comments on the fact that a state of “total war” is impossible for humans. Not everyone can be in war mode one hundred percent of the time. Humanity had never experienced anything like the army of the living dead. The undead were always in a state of total war (Brooks, 272-273). Of course, growing up comes with its own set of fears, the most common being fear of failure. If I let fear take over and refuse to use logical thinking, it will begin to hinder my success. It may cause me to take on the wrong mindset and try to become something I’m not. However, if I find people who have the same concerns that I do, we can help each other grow as people and eliminate our fears. In the same way fear of the undead brought people together towards a common goal, I should look for people with similar interests and goals throughout my four years at West Virginia University for to better myself and others. Having fears is not necessarily a bad thing; what you do with them is what
