was in a state of emergency, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the U.S. was dragged into the war even though they were still under the influence of the Great Depression. Resources were especially scarce and they needed resources for war. This led to rationing or regulating the number of scarce resources each person can get during the war. Rationing was important since it helped supply the soldiers and made sure that not one person had everything. According to document 2, resources such as sugar, gasoline, as well as coffee was rationed during the war. Gasoline was especially important since it fueled vehicles that helped transport goods faster and efficiently Furthermore, items such as tires and boots were also in short supply and to divide these goods they established a system of rationing where families received a fixed amount of certain items.(O.I) Items that were not appreciated and became more valuable and more important thus, affected many families. Families with large amounts of a certain item had to give much of it away to others who didn’t have any, while families who had nothing. These families had to comply with the government without complaint otherwise, they will be charged with treason. Many viewed this as a sacrifice to win the war while others wanted to keep the resources for themselves.
