Before World War I no one knew how horrific the war was going to be. War was all about nationalism, honor, and pride in fighting for your country. In All Quiet On The Western Front teachers and other role models pressured a whole generation into fighting for their country, completely blind to the fact that war was not as great and honorable when you are the one fighting. It was like torture watching each of their friends - who were close enough to be brothers die one by one, for no reason. In the book Paul watched Kemmerich, a close friend die, “Come quick; Franz Kemmerich is dying… We are by Kemmerich’s bed. He is dead” (Remarque 12). In the poem the whole group watched their friend die from mustard gas, “Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning” (Owen 1). Everyone was hurt by this war and the horrible things that happened even if some did not witness it all. Especially the younger generation who were pressured by adults and even others their age to join the war. The young generation was betrayed by the teachers and role models they looked up to, who did not know any better. Wilfred Owen referred to that in “Dulce Et Decorum Est” when he wrote, “If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, - My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori” (Owen 1). The war was awful, it is estimated that over 38 million people died in World War I, in All Quiet On The Western Front it states, “The war swept us away” (Remarque 7). The war did sweep about a whole generation away, but before the war no one really knew how bad it would be.
