World War I was a global war that originated in Europe. It began on July 28,1914 and ended on November 11,1918. There were many events that contributed to the start of the war, but one of the main causes was the death of Archduke Franz Ferndinand. A Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, assassinated the Archduke. After the Archduke was confirmed dead, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. There are ultimately thirty total countries that entered the war on one side or another but these eleven are the main countries we hear about today. After Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia stepped in to help. Russia joined forces with Serbia. Germany then declared war on Russia. France partnered with Russia to help fight Germany and Austria-Hungary. Britain was brought in to the war when Germany attacked France in Belgium. As time passed Japan also joined the war. Later, Italy and the United States joined the war and sided with the allies.

Germany only controlled small parts of Africa but wanted much more. Conflicts rose during a fight for Africa in the late 1800s. Germany and Britain were able to secure the remaining parts of the continent. Imperial conflicts were present during nationalism, which added more tension in Europe. Nationalism caused many problems alongside imperialism. Nationalism is known as extreme loyalty to your country. Prior to World War I the Europeans were very devoted nationalist, which caused delusions making Europe seem like they would not lose a war if one began. Germany’s nationalism was just as extreme as Europe’s. Since the citizens were so loyal to their country, they did not have a problem forming a well rounded military when the time came to
