Day by day we walk past hundreds, maybe thousands of people. Not knowing what they see and not knowing who they actually are. We sometimes meet a person and think “they’re nice,” “they remind me of my friend,” or “what a psychopath.” We do not always think about what the actual definition of a psychopath is and what makes them a psychopath. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary a psychopath is defined as “a person with a clear perception of reality, but lacking a sense of social and moral obligation, so that personal gain is sought by criminal acts, drug addiction, or sexual perversion without marked feelings of guilt” (“Psychopath”).
Since psychopathy is mental condition it comes, naturally, with symptoms …show more content…
Some confuse it with the condition of sociopathy which is close, but not the same. Sociopaths are people that behave dangerously and incredibly antisocial (Sociopath.) Bruce Livesey once stated “Psychopaths, on the other hand, are social predators who charm, manipulate and ruthlessly plow their way through life, completely lacking conscience and feelings for others.” Most individuals confuse psycho with psychopath as well, psycho is the abbreviation for psychotic. Psychotic means that someone is not seeing reality, they hallucinate and have delusions (Nichols). While psychopaths are completely in touch with reality with every action they do. Another inaccurate assumption is that all psychopaths are serial killers, terrorists, or criminals in general. On many occasions I have read articles by psychopaths themselves or about psychopaths that are gentle people and have caused no harm to others. “Many psychopaths are criminals, but many others manage to remain out of prison, using their charm and chameleon-like coloration to cut a wide swathe through society and leaving a wake of ruined lives behind them” (Hare). It seems Mark Nichols disagrees with Hare according to this statement: “Many psychopaths find wealth and success as highly manipulative corporate careerists, as thugs on professional sports teams or as unscrupulous …show more content…
Psychopaths see things different than anyone else. They might hit a dog in the road while driving and not even flinch, and if they do it is to worry about the damage done to their vehicle. The average person would flinch, scream, cry, and maybe even get out of the car to see if they can help the animal in any way possible. “Words like rape, cancer, and death generate no more action in the brain of a psychopath than do the words like tree, plate, and house” (Munro). For many people around the world therapy and counseling helps cope with things they cannot handle, it helps them relieve the pain that the world causes. “Hare speculates that therapy is like finishing school for psychopaths, "It teaches them better ways of manipulating people"” (Munro). Psychopathy is like being someone able to read, but being mute, they can see and understand the words but they cannot speak them. Psychopaths can see and understand emotions but they do not have the ability to feel
