In the book Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, the World State Government maintains control in similar fashions to the way that present day government works. Both governments create stability by setting rules and standards and giving a tranquilizer or distraction to the people so that everything is manageable and can be controlled. The World State Government is built and created to maintain order and stability. The stability that the World State creates is needed, as said in the book, “Stability. The primal and ultimate need” (Huxley 43). The World State provides this need for the people by keeping everyone on a similar status, and making sure there is no chaos by limiting the emotions and freedom of the people. This drug is produced to keep the people content and distracted from events and emotions that can cause disorder and inconvenience. Lenina consumes Soma so “she could now sit, serenely not listening ,thinking of nothing at all” (Huxley 101). Soma completely numbed her mind and body from her surroundings. The effect of Soma distracting someone completely from the situation at hand is a way the World State continues to keep everyone in a calm, stable state. The government relies on this form of stability so much that they promote and insist on taking Soma for every day use. The way World State views Soma is similar to the why the U.S government did not abolish alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant causing the consumer to calm down similar to they way Soma numbs the body. The normal and maybe even every day use for Alcohol is also similar to they way that people under the control of the World State use Soma. At one point in history the United States tried to abolish alcohol, however the effect of this ban caused riots and rebellion amongst the people. Once the rebellion started the country had no choice but to bring alcohol back to regain the hold of the American people.
