World Of Warcraft: Achieving Habits Of Scientific Thinking

Improved Essays
In my experience, I have found World of Warcraft, or WoW, to be more effective in cultivating habits of scientific thinking than its educational counterparts: labs and textbooks. In their introduction, Steinkuehler and Duncan quote Henri Poincare as he reflected on the progress of scientific inquiry: "Science is built up of facts, as a house is built up of stones; but an accumulation of facts is no more science than a heap of stones is a house." Taken aback upon reading this quote, suddenly all I could think about was the years I remember losing interest in science class because teachers handed us stones without instructing us on how to build houses. It was no wonder I turned to this massive multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG). Shabriri was a priest (a healer, in the game) who with the help of a kind guild, conquered dungeons, slew bosses, and led raids. Here I finally learned how to collaborate with others, ask for help without feeling ashamed, and expand my perception of issues without a specific solution. A …show more content…
I could not help but think of a specific page in my psychology textbook detailing the scientific method. When a problem arises, the first step is to conduct a literature review; similarly, guild members consult group chats or forums on a specific issue before attempting to solve it. The next step is to develop a testable hypothesis, or "plan of attack". Accordingly, the plan of attack is carried out by players. Once we have collected the data from the results of the test, we analyze it and determine how to improve upon it. Players usually submit these results back into the group chats and forums, which demonstrates the cyclicity of the scientific method. To quote actor Adam Savage, "The difference between messing around and science is writing it

Relevance and attention work hand-in-hand, but they work differently from person to person. The one-size-fits-all model of standards calls for a student who is expected to learn only in the way that he has been taught and only what he has been taught; however the one-size-fits-all model does not represent every single student. It fails to recognize the different types of students⏤some who may have learning disabilities or who may just not be genetically constructed to attain lessons in the traditional way that has been used over the centuries⏤and instead catalogues each and every one into a single category when it comes to education. Cathy Davidson, in her article “Project Classroom Makeover,” cries out for a change in the educational system…

Logos, What the World Needs More of Science is based in logos. Research and experiments are attempts to establish facts, and to draw correct conclusions based on those facts. While all of science is based on this, I am a personal trainer, so I’m most familiar with the health sciences and research. When discussing health, it would seem obvious that it should be a factual process. If I do A, B will happen.…

In Defense of SF as a High School Elective High School is the educational backbone of what will create our society at large. What studies are necessary in order to create a functioning and prosperous society? Clearly, there is an emphasis on STEAM related fields, since those lead to well paying work opportunities, but we should not forget the value of critical thinking. There is no better way to enforce our STEAM educational goals than with introducing SF as an elective for students to take in conjunction with their studies. SF has the unique opportunity of entertaining through fiction, but also lends scientific insights which will reinforce the learning of students.…

Introduction What is Naturalism? Naturalism is a philosophical approach that considers just the presence of nature, consequently things that are heavenly, similar to phantoms, divine beings and spirits, are non-existent. It supports the idea that the most ideal way to prove something to be factual is through the scientific method. Scientific methods are used in order to discover and find answers to problems and issues of the society. The steps to be considered are the following.…

McClellan’s article (2005) reports that according to Johnson’s study, computer games are essentially brain exercises that holistically improves psychological fitness. This is because computer games require continuous focus, strategic decision-making, and creative thinking. Another form of display interface is video games which have also been found to improve these aspects. This is important as children often find gaming fun and must, therefore, be utilised productively to aid the development of mental acumen. An example of this would be Assassin’s Creed, a role-playing game about alternate versions of history.…

She points out the facts about how games can end poverty: “more than 19,000 players of EVOKE, an online game that I created for the World Bank Institute, undertook real-world missions to improve food security, increase access to clean energy and end poverty in more than 130 countries” (para. 13). These facts support the idea that people who play video games can help change the world. McGonigal keeps supporting her argument with many more statistics, for instance, “in 2010 more than 57,000 gamers were listed as co-authors for a research paper in the prestigious scientific journal Nature. The gamers with no previous background in biochemistry had worked in a 3D game environment called Foldit, folding virtual proteins in new ways that could help cure cancer or prevent Alzheimer’s”…

Deception plays a key and controversial role in the ethics of psychological research. In psychology, deception occurs either when information is withheld from participants (omission) or when participants are intentionally misinformed about an aspect of the research (commission). This essay will explore whether participants in psychological experiments should ever be deceived regarding the true nature of the experiment. This will be analysed by discussing the arguments for and against deception using some controversial case studies in research. Non deceptive methods of research do not always allow researchers to explore true findings.…

Group Decision Making Sound decision making is an integral part of the overall success of any organization. While the leader of the organization has the final say in the overall decision making process, group decision making can generate a more complete solution to a problem by aggregating the resources of several individuals. This offers increased diversity of ideas and opens the door for more potential solutions to a problem to be considered, thereby leading to a greater sense of acceptance of the chosen solution by members of the organization (Robbins & Judge, 2009). While group decision making can lead to more favorable outcomes, it is not a perfect process.…
