Was the French Revolution Successful? The French Revolution took place in the late 18th century and was caused by unfair taxes and no political representation towards the third estate which was made up of peasants, workers and commoners. Although immediate effects of the revolution were the beheading of Louis XVI and the Reign of Terror, in the end the revolution proved to not be as successful as it seem. The French Revolution was not successful because the third estate did not meet their goals of moving away from a monarchy structure of government and instead ended up killing many of their own people in the fight for their equality.
One of the main causes of the French Revolution were the unfair taxes given to the third estate. This is evident in a Arthur young’s book Travels in france when it states “In the south of france there is a talle [tax on the land and its produce]. There is an injustice in levying the amount each person must pay. Lands held by the nobility are taxed very little. Lands held by the commoners are taxed very heavily.” This quote shows us how the third estate, that were the commoners, felt that the government was unfair to them since they would pay a lot more than the other estates.
