Games that are used to promote a product, and/or a company trying to promote a product or commercial message inside a retail accessible video game is called an advergame. Usually, advergames are used to promote products that are high in sugar and fat content. For example, there is a game called “World Gone Sour” that is used to promote the product Sour Patch Kids (A type of sour gummy candy). Advergames don't just promote the product they also create money for the company! Ad revenue in video games went from 205 million dollars in 2007 to a grand total of 478 million dollars in 2012, that's a 133% increase! Also, Pc and Console revenue went from 90 million dollars to 172 million dollars from 2000 to 2012. The slow growth of Console and Pc revenue is due to hardcore gamers resisting ads, and there are low levels of online gameplay on consoles. Plus it is very hard to measure the response to ads in offline play. Furthermore, ads influence kids purchasing choices. Advergames persuade on a subconscious emotional level. Also, advergames can change children's behavior without the child's conscious awareness. Consequently, this can create a tension between kids and their parents. Advertisers like to put ads into the game as the player progresses. For example, the player will see an ad every time he/she completes every level. Also, advertisers want to put product placement and ads on billboards inside of games. By this I mean if you were playing a video game, and inside the game, you were walking down the street and then you happen to look up to see a billboard that has a giant advertisement for sprite on it. Finally, advertisers are trying to find new and creative ways of reaching 18 to 34-year-olds, This is most likely because 18-year-olds can play any rated game, this includes the rating M (mature) so they are most likely to see the most
