World Class Engineering Students

In order to be a successful world class engineering student, and further enjoy your educational experience in the process, you need to be relatively self-aware. An example student would understand that learning how to slow down and analyze where they are at in various areas of personal development would be a tremendous help in succeeding in school and in the rest of life. Students who practice and work at being “good students” generally do noticeably better in school, and tend to get more out of their education. The key is to understand that the learning isn’t just in the classroom, at that they way you live outside of school has a direct impact on your education. Your time management skills, study habits, physical and mental health as well …show more content…
Two of my main pitfalls in school have been poor study habits and procrastination, which I’ve found really go hand in hand. Even in high school, I would avoid homework and certainly wouldn’t study unless I had a project due the next day, and even then I occasionally decided to spend my time doing something else. For the most part I understood what was being taught to me, and usually scored very high on tests. I point that out only to compare it to my lack of consistently high grades to support those test scores. There were many classes that I could have received an A grade in but ended up with a C or even a D. I am aware that this is primarily due to my terrible habit of procrastination. During my last few years at PCC, my study skills weren’t that much better. I still put things off, and with the increasingly difficult course work, I found myself growing more and more frustrated at the decreasing quality of my work. Even looking back now, I am disappointed in the low grades I received in many classes. Reading through our text book and reflecting on the many methods of personal development have been enlightening and very encouraging; in a way I wish I had come across some of this advice earlier …show more content…
I’ve been trying to run/jog regularly for almost two years now and that has been very encouraging. I’ve also found that when I exercise more frequently, I usually have more energy and am significantly more self-confident. This leads to me being more productive and more satisfied with the work I accomplish. I found that I can relieve a lot of stress by keeping my household clean and organized, which helps me decompress and comes with numerous other benefits. This term I have been practicing these and other methods of self-improvement and I really believe it is paying off. I am much more engaged in school and am more excited to finish my degree than I’ve ever been. The one major obstacle I am working on is networking with my peers. This is going to be outside of my comfort zone for sure, but it is necessary, and honestly I know I will enjoy it once I take the initiative with others to establish new relationships. Overall I think I am off to a good start in school now, and will be continuously looking for ways to improve and better myself so that I can be the best engineer I can possibly be, and truly enjoy

My parents have always challenged me to strive to do my best since I was a child. From pushing me to learn how to ride a bike at age five, to striving me to achieve a higher ACT score to attend the college I love, I learned how to become very independent and credible. As I approached my high school years, I changed mentally by creating a positive mindset after my freshman year. As to this day, getting a 3.11-grade point average has affected me in both positive and negative ways. One characteristic that I figured out about myself is that I am a person who learns from mistakes due to the fact that I am a tactile learner.…

I walked into my high school for the first time a shy, naive, non-resourceful kid who didn’t think that he would need to study for the classes he had take and that high school would be a breeze like middle school was. It’s easy to say that I was clearly not ready for the challenging classes that faced me. I ended my first trimester devastated, but determined to improve my performance come next trimester. As an intrinsically motivated student, I decided that if I was going to get the grades I desired, I would need to do something I had never done before, and that was to study regularly and consistently. The next trimester, I put my old habits to rest as I stopped procrastinating, and started to use the resources that I hadn’t even tried to use…

Over the course of the semester, I endured many challenges that I was able to eventually overcome. At the beginning of the semester one of the challenges I faced was time management. One of the reasons that this happened is that the class met once a week and I was accustomed to meeting with my professors twice a week. For this reason, at the beginning of the course adjusting to the workload was an issue. Since the class met once a week, I left most of the readings and reflections that were assigned for the night before.…
