At my job we use preference assessments to determine what motivates or reinforce good behavior. A research based method that we use is is “direct observation” we utilize direct observation by presenting the student with several option that he/she may like. We figure these things out from parents, teachers or previous things he/she requested. The we present all of the objects on a folder or tri-fold, removing highly preferred items to determine other items that would motivate the student.
