“Emotional labor is an employee’s expression of organizationally desired emotions during interpersonal transactions at work” (Robbins & Judge, 2009). The hospital where I work expects its employees to be cheerful and courteous to staff and patients. There are times when I go see a patient who is angry and who yells at me. I then have to still be courteous to the patient. This is very hard at times and I have to separate my emotions. I still smile, and I am still courteous. This can be done by setting goals. It is also important to provide training. I receive training periodically regarding patient privacy so that I understand the privacy laws when doing clerical duties (McFarlin, 2015). There are days that emotions are high, and staff and patients are emotional. Emotions change constantly, depending on one’s mood (Robbins & Judge, 2009). AET shows how employees react emotionally to things that happen to them at work, and that this reaction influences their job performance and satisfaction. When I have an emotionally charged day at work I can tell that my performance at work changes. My motivation level decreases. I do not want to even be at work. I do not have a positive outlook on my job duties. On the other side, I noticed that when I have a positive day at work, I am more motivated to do my job.
