While employers have a vast scope in what they may expect in terms of grooming and dress, they are not allowed to have standards that in effect cause the employee to be sexually harassed. Therefore, employers should keep appearance standards job-related and when faced with a request for an exception based on race, sex, religion, or some other protected class, seek human resource and/or legal counsel.
