You have indicated some very important rules that warrant addressing in pretty much all workplaces. In my opinion, it is highly imperative that we focus on the issues that are hampering the productivity and success of our business. Likewise, many of the areas that you have highlighted are very essential in helping to portray a positive message and image about your company. Likewise, you have indicated that the manner of dress is an issue within your workplace that needed work rules to be established. I know at my place of employment, we had to simply implement workplace rules for dress code because we had many issues with some of the employee's attire and appearance which did not place our company in a positive light. While employers have a vast scope in what they may expect in terms of grooming and dress, they are not allowed to have standards that in effect cause the employee to be sexually harassed. Therefore, employers should keep appearance standards job-related and when faced with a request for an exception based on race, sex, religion, or some other protected class, seek human resource and/or legal counsel. All the more it is important for employees to comply with the workplace rules as they have been set to ensure the health and safety of the employees. This is highly due to more legal cases are being spotlighted in the media and furthermore, employers and employees are uncertain as to what is deemed as acceptable dress in the workplace.
Many employers and researchers believe that even-handed dress and grooming standards are legal. However, in certain situations, there can be serious legal pitfalls for those who adhere to this practice.
