Why Managers Need to Understand Cultural, Ethnic, and Gender Differences in Business The computer age and increase in technology has created the world to become smaller and more interconnected between people from diverse cultures around the world. Although there is a continued improvement towards diversity tolerance, there are still challenges to be faced within today’s society. In a business sense, interconnection is important for economic growth and survival and these challenges should pave the way towards organizations to restructure their hiring practices and perception of diversity. Within the last few decades, this trend has been changing due to a growing minority population, and an increase in education amongst diverse groups. Due to this, one third of the global workforce has been outsourced to China and India. “Emerging global trends are driving the growing economic power of a diverse workforce” (Amadeo, 2014). Discrimination in the workforce occurs when people are either denied employment opportunities, or once employed, they are treated on a lower level (Bell, 2007). Management is the forefront towards implementing a change; and needs to facilitate a healthy work environment by promoting a more diverse friendly workplace, so that each person can learn new ideas and skills from others in order to strive towards reaching one’s highest potential. According to Dobbs, “Pioneering organizations integrated diversity strategies into organization practices.” This allowed managers to restructure, create new positions, and change policies so that measures could be taken to reinforce integration on a continuous bases (1996).
