Although there are many different type of workplace accident that can cause serious, severe or even fatal injuries, falls from height are the largest cause of workplace fatalities in the UK. Due to the dangerous nature of working at height, employers are all subjected to The Work at Height Regulations 2005 (later amended in 2007), which have been put in place to protect anyone who is asked to work at height, regardless of the industry or workplace environment.
Employer Responsibility

This includes training for all of the equipment and tools used during the work process, all of the equipment used to prevent a fall, and all of the measures that should be taken at height to prevent a fall and ensure the safety of each employee and their colleagues below.
Causes of Falls from Height
Falls from Ladders – Falls from ladders that are either unsuitable for the job or are not being used correctly are some of the most common falls from height of any workplace. Workers can also fall from ladders if they are unable to use the equipment properly due to the number of tools they must carry, or if there are a lack of stabilisers at the bottom of the ladder.
Falls from Roofs – This particular type of fall is extremely common within construction workplaces, where roof tiles can often be unstable and workers are regularly working at height with little protective equipment. Roofs can also collapse under the weight of the workers.
Falls from Machines – Many of the larger machines used within some of the UK’s traditional workplaces are extremely dangerous and far from the ground. Workers using such machines can easily fall off and occasionally fall into the machine
