While I was on placement on a surgical-orthopaedic ward, I was completing the vital sign checks on the patients in a six bed ward room. As I was cleaning down the Dina map and thermometer, one of the nurses came into the ward area. She looked around the room, walked back out and said to me as she was leaving that she would return in a few minutes. I was confused but remained in the room for her to return. When she did she handed me one of the hospital admission forms with a page open which had the “Maintaining a safe environment” care plan interventions on it. She started to inform me that there was several things wrong in the room which hindered the care plan being maintained to ensure the safety of the patients, that I was to figure out which …show more content…

(2012) both found in their research that as nurses we aren’t always as compassionate towards fellow colleagues, who are both qualified and training, that we work with. From their research they both found that bullying and intimidation between staff members is very prevalent in clinical settings. Judith A. et al. (2010) also emphasises how interpersonal relationships need to be without conflict in order for patients to get the highest level of care. She questions about how they are able to remain empathetic and caring towards patients, when they themselves are being treated poorly by their colleagues. Some were found to have decided to leave their training as they found it too overwhelming, others decided to progress to qualification, these students often went on to re-enacting this behaviour towards future students learning under their supervision. Not only is this lack of support evident amongst student nurses but also amongst the newly qualified staff nurses, where increased workloads and a higher demand on them professionally (Thyrsoe L. et. al.

    When a group or team is put together, it is each individual’s duty to put an effort into upholding these traits. But, when if even one individual promotes incivility or exhibits negative behaviors, it prevents the entire group of further achieving a goal. Without the full cooperation of each individual the group will be unable to strive further or become successful at the task at hand.     A few years ago, I responded to an article published by a nursing school in the mid-west stating that we needed to stand up for ourselves as a profession and assertively demand civility with each other to expand the nursing profession. I responded and described how nurses can be bullies to each other, and standing up for oneself can make your situation worse. The requirements in nursing in the hospital means taking care of patients with higher acuity, administering many more complicated medications, monitoring procedures that may require conscious sedation or medication drips, along with completing tasks such as cleaning patients and beds, cleaning rooms and being responsible for nutrition and feedings. Because there is not enough staff on the unit, nurses group together to try and maintain an "easier" day. Especially a group of charge nurses protecting each other when interchanging responsibilities. Many times one or two nurses are bullied because someone has to take care of the more complicated patients that need total care. And if you complain, it makes it worse; the patient assignments are patients no one else wants. Those who are bullying convince the management that those who are being bullied, somehow deserve it.
