Workplace Appearance Policy Paper

Improved Essays
In my opinion, I strongly believe an appearance policy should be implemented and enforced at all workplaces. As can be recognized in the articles provided, appearance makes a difference and has the ability to positively impact business, as well as affect how an individual feels and behaves. At my current workplace we have an appearance policy that simply focuses on the idea that employees are representing the company; therefore, we must be present ourselves with good-hygiene and a well-groomed appearance. Whether the policy is basic like that of my current workplace, or detailed such as a company encouraging salesmen not to have long shaggy hair this decision should be up to the business owner themselves in what they will require salespeople

After reading a case study about dreadlock I personally believe Christopher Polk and others like him should be allowed to “violate” a grooming policy on the basis of a religious proclamation on the sanctity of dread locks. This is because discrimination against religion is illegal. Creating a grooming policy that conflicts with legal rights is wrong ethically and is itself in violation. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits job discrimination on the basis of race, sex, color, religion or national origin (Thorne, 2011). One of the main reasons it was passed is because of the discrimination blacks felt (Thorne, 2011).…

Eating grocery-store food is not currently viewed with suspicion, whereas a hand-prepared, foraged meal raises eyebrows. How do chemicals, shiny steel factories, and tin cans make us feel more secure in the buccal insertion of chemical-laden foodstuffs? How did we get to the point where, unless, it comes from a can, box, or bag, food is suspect? Now, I don’t advocate blaming everything on the government.…

Overall, I have concluded that there should be dress code guidelines for certain jobs, but they should ban them from schools. Kids should be worrying about their education and not their style. There is nothing wrong with dressing how you want to dress; so if a dress code is a problem, then simply try go somewhere else if you're able. Not everyone is going to agree with your style, but if it makes you happy, then don't worry about what people think. It's your lifestyle, and you deserve to be able to live your life the way you want!…

We all know that group of girls who show up to school with their breast popping out of their shirts, butts hanging out of their shorts, and belly shirts that show way too much skin. Obviously, dressing like this to school is in no way appropriate, and should be addressed. Another argument of why the dress code should be enforced is the fact that school is a learning environment and that we should be teaching kids how to dress for the future. By doing this, you are helping young adults understand that wearing a crop top or (for boys) wearing saggy pants to an interview definitely won’t get you a job. Others may say that enforcing the dress code, like providing school uniforms, will help families that are in poverty and will decrease bullying when it comes to making fun of someone’s…

American society accepting something simple such as a hair texture has allowed me to feel welcomed in American society. Society has previously created a demeaning relationship between ethnic hair and professionalism. For instance, natural hair is labeled and unprofessional, while white, straight hair is known as professional. As a woman of color, working two jobs (both high positioned on campus) I was not discriminated because of the texture of my hair. Professionalism is being an expert at a specific skill and my hair should not affect my abilities to do my job in a workplace.…

So here, to solve this issue, the more casual dress code should work. But, as I have pointed out before the restrictions which will help to regulate employees appearance are still a must. For example, factory workers shouldn’t be allowed to wear nylon cloth, or office workers and especially people working face-to-face with a client are permitted to wear beach clothes or too open sexual clothes, also it should be permitted to come to the office wearing boxers or too short skirt and high heels. Moreover, in the last example, it can have a harmful effect not only on the working environment but also on woman…
