Workman's Chapel: A Short Story

Improved Essays
This summer I got my license and took a little adventure. My two friends Cloe, Teya, and I were bored and didn’t have anything to do, so we decided to go to Maryville. We went to Workman’s Chapel, which is right outside of Maryville. Workman’s Chapel is an old haunted church and cemetery. The story behind Workman’s Chapel is that a preacher stabbed a woman in a white dress to death and hid the knife under the floor boards of the church. Another woman was hung from one of the trees towards the back of the church. When you go to the old church now you are supposed to be able to hear the girl’s scream. If you park under the big tree you are expected to hear the girl who got hung there years before, feet scrap across your hood. I’ve also heard …show more content…
We were at Walmart for a good two hours. We couldn’t find anything to get, until we got to the fish isle. We ended up getting a glow in the dark one and a tiny yellow fish. We then got some cherries and went to self checkout. It took about twenty minutes to get checked out because the scanner wouldn’t work, but then we finally got out of there. We decided to go back to Workmans and got lost once again. We finally made it and I parked in the same spot as before. I stayed in the car and they got out again.
They went up to the church and looked in, without going in. They then proceeded to the cemetery. They looked in the cemetery and started screaming and ran back to the car. Another car got on the same road, and we were in a hurry because we didn’t know who it was.
We quickly left and started heading home, when the car that pulled onto the road started following us. I started driving faster and faster until I couldn’t see their headlights in my rearview mirror anymore. We saw the mysterious car turn onto another road.
We all were a little freaked out but made it back to my house safely. We got my clothes then spent the night at Cloe’s house where we stayed up too late and laughed way to0 hard. I will never forget this trip because of the expressions on my friend’s faces and my new pets Sushi and

Johnny Cade is a 16-year-old boy who lives in the neighborhood of Meadowbrook, with his mom and dad. Johnny’s parents are abusive, and he takes his parents’ abuse to him personally. On top of that, he doesn't quite get enough to eat, and he often sleeps outdoors. According to Ponyboy Curtis, one of his close friends, he says he “looks like a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers”. To make things even worse, Johnny was brutally beaten by the “Socs” last spring and now lives in a constant state of fear.…

Ponyboy was really the first person I could express my opinions to and the first person I could really talk to about how I feel about this stupid social division we have to go by. Even though he doesn’t really understand how we Socs have problems too, I can see that he at least sort of understands- not completely, but just a little… Knowing that he sort of understands is a mixed feeling of relief and just a bit of an absurd feeling as well, I mean, a Soc and a greaser actually having a nice conversation.. I didn’t expect him to actually understand at all, but I also didn’t expect him to be completely ignorant about it either. “Cherry, look what’s coming,” Marcia quickly addressed. I watched the blue Mustang as it was coming down the street.…

No one knows what the precise apparition the young girls saw that day was. How strange that it would be merely, “Young girls who met in small informal gatherings to discuss the future,” (Boyer Nissenbaum xx) who would send the newly colonized New England into a frenzy. They were like most girls of the time, concerned with questions of what occupations their husbands would have. In Salem village they, “Devised a primitive crystal ball— the white of a egg suspended in glass— and received a chilling answer: in the glass there floated a ‘specter in the likeness of a coffin,” (Boyer Nissenbaum xx). From that strange apparition sprung a terror in the young girls who would carry out strange acts, and convince their caretakers of possession.…

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a very different book. This is because it is written from an “outsider’s” perspective. However, we didn’t get to see much of the Soc’s point of view. Cherry says in the book that life for an “insider” isn’t as great as it looks to the Greasers. Have you ever had the feeling of complete and udder emptiness, like someone punched a hole in your chest and ripped out your heart? This is the feeling that swept over me as I sat on a hard, brown, wooden pew at my neighbor’s funeral visitation. Honestly I wasn’t even sure if my heart was beating anymore, I felt so dead inside. All sorts of people wandered into the church. It was packed, I mean wall to wall bodies.…

The idea of supernatural beings haunting people is nothing new, and it is still expressed in culture today. In Henry James’ Turn of the Screw, Miss Jessel is a minor character, yet she significantly affects the governess by lowering her credibility among others and by playing tricks with her mind. Miss Jessel’s effects on the governess emphasize how insanity can result from mere figments of the imagination. The insanity of the governess results largely from her vivid visions of Miss Jessel’s ghost which significantly lower the credibility of the governess from the eyes of Mrs. Grose and Flora.…

The Rothko Chapel, located in Houston, Texas, presents a deceptively simple exterior. The ungarnished brick walls lack intrigue or grandeur, the doorway is simply a means of entrance rather than a spectacle, yet over 55,000 visitors are drawn to the location every year (YouTube). The sanctuary inside is just as plain, aside from fourteen imposing murals created by the chapel’s namesake, Mark Rothko. They adorn bare walls, constantly shifting appearance with the light cast from the chapel’s skylight (Dowell). They seem to be the only lively aspects of an otherwise static place.…
