The self-assessment defined competing, as a desire to satisfy ones interest, regardless of the impact on the other party (Prentice Hall’s Self-Assessment Library, 2009). I have always known that I am a competitive person, but never view new that I could possibly be overlooking the interests of my co-workers. This conflict resolution style means that I prefer to sacrifice my goals and beliefs to avoid conflict with team members. The accommodating conflict resolution style allows for relationships between group members to be unstrained and preserved. I believe that this is my conflict resolution styles because every team or group I have been a part of I do not share my opinions for the sake of avoiding an argument or disagreement. Appendix 1: Working Individually and Collaboratively During this practical I have had to work collaboratively with my partner during the experiment and individually while writing this practical report. My experience has been interesting, positive, and at the same time rewarding. My very first experience with working in group was couple of years ago during a final year project, in my country of birth. The project was in community medicine, and involved repeated trip to a rural community by my group to access their health status, and needs. We had many challenges, but overcame them all as a group. I learnt the act of collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making by consensus building, and most importantly; comradeship.…

Introduction I currently work as a self-harm practitioner in a multidisciplinary community team which provides treatment for people who self-harm and have diagnoses of personality disorder. In my current role I have opportunities to work therapeutically with patients both on an individual basis and in groups. I enjoy being part of this multidisciplinary team and participating in the experiential group. Coupled with knowledge of theoretical concepts and frameworks I feel that this has greatly increased my understanding of what it is to be a member of a work group. In groups we have to be aware of other people, we have to compromise and abandon our own egocentric needs in order to maintain our place in the group, but at the same time group membership…

I have encountered many different types of conflict styles while working in groups. The conflict styles are competing, avoiding, and collaborating. For example, my current team has two individuals with two strong personalities who are clearly competing for who is always has the answer, who is always right, the first to speak, etc. There is a person on the team who does not participate in coming up with ideas to help make our team have a boost in moral. This person does not speak up and when asked a question, they shrug their shoulders.…

While working with one of my clients who was quadriplegic, I reviewed his care plan and noticed that much of it had not been updated since February. After talking to the LPN also working with him, I printed off a copy and brought it to his room to discuss. We went through it and discussed what he was still doing and what has changed. I ended up modifying one of his goals to acknowledge that he will perform breath stacking and coughing techniques PRN instead of the 2 times a day.…

There aren't any specific things that anger me at my placement since the individuals I work with and the clients that come in are relatively nice. However, it can be frustrating at times to consistently do a lot of paperwork and there are moments where I have to wait around until someone has a task for me to complete. The paperwork aspect of it can become repetitive in a negative way since there are times where I'm not learning anything new and not gaining experience. The way I deal with this situation is by trying to take initiative. I will do this by asking around to see if any of the lawyers and assistants need help with anything.…

Participating in this class, as well as several dialogues this semester has opened up my eyes to the way I handle myself in conflict situations. By studying different management styles and other conflict philosophies and applying them I have been able to see what I could improve within myself to help have more meaningful conflict that moves a relationship in a positive direction, versus having conflict just for the sake of conflict. From this I have developed three strategies that I would like to apply more when faced with conflict. I will be more open minded about possible collaboration of ideas, I will try to focus on the source of the conflict not just the tension on the surface, and finally I will prioritize managing intrapersonal conflict…

Conflict is part of life, and it is perhaps close to inevitable in the workplace. As you and your coworkers work toward developing new ideas and improving and marketing your products and services, clashes in personality, philosophy, and intent are not just expected, but almost inescapable. The good news is that conflict does not have to be a negative experience - if dealt with correctly, conflict can be a springboard for sharing ideas, developing strategies, and working together successfully as a team. However, if those involved do not know how to respond effectively to conflict, more problems will be created instead of solved.…
