Starting in October of 2015 I was working with a registered dietitian by the name of Susan Lang, who works at ShopRite in Flemington N.J. The first volunteering opportunity had been to help Susan with a project that was not related to the real service learning, but to her own job responsibilities. Nevertheless, I was asked to stand at a display table and hand out various assortments of healthy store made salads, to ShopRite associates, and given a short script to discuss the taste of each salad. For example, Edamame salad derived from Japan and has high amounts of phosphorus and plant protein. Here I was able to get a good understanding of the type of associates, (including age, gender, and interest level) I would be presenting to. I gathered …show more content…
The voluntary questionnaire, named, ‘Please taste and Rate’; There were three categories represented a sad face as dislike, neutral face as undecided, and a happy face as acceptable. After tasting the samples, people were prompted to rate how they liked the Walnut Banana Shake. On the other hand, the involuntary questionnaire was filled out myself using the same format as the voluntary questionnaire. The attitude and interest level of the individuals I spoke with were measured by level of interest or lack of. Each questionnaire took as long as it was to decide on whether they liked or dislike the …show more content…
I felt that from a knowledge preparation I was okay, just that the effectiveness could have been better. I didn’t know how to overcome an environment that seemed unconcerned about health benefits with cake and pizza in front of me trying to offer a banana walnut shake. The experience made me think about reconnaissance. I felt that my experience would have been a better one if I knew beforehand where I was going to be place and if any events were to take place at the same time. I think that reconnaissance help prepare and visualize how to approach a situation. I actually did a similar presentation of food and body in a couple different churches. Only difference was that it was in PowerPoint. I felt that the presentation with PowerPoint was more effective because people were sitting down and listening to what I had to say. At ShopRite I felt that half of the people were ‘forced’ by Susan to come see me not because they wanted to.
My thinking changed in the way that I need to prepare much better than I did. Not so much for the actual project, but for overcoming the unexpected variables. For example, having the brochures printed prior to going to ShopRite and not assuming that Susan would be able to do

Lindholm explains that leadership in the Student Association of Nutrition and Dietetics at Kansas State University as well as undergraduate coursework prepared her for grant writing by increasing her understanding of organizational structure and improving her writing skills. She notes that her dietetic internship at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas gave her a greater understanding of food service management that somewhat relates to her management responsibilities at NTFB. The key to Lindholm’s educational background is her nutrition understanding that allows her to communicate the significance of giving clients quality food to meet the spectrum of their nutritional needs. As a registered dietitian and full-time employee, Lindholm expresses dedication to consulting on the nutritional quality of foods for all programs. An example of her influence is the development of Community Gardens program that increases the provision of fresh produce to clients.…

Can the Government Fix Everything? Government control has had a place among America’s debatable topics, and the new focus is obesity. In Radley Balko’s essay “What You Eat Is Your Business”, which was published May 23, 2004 on the Cato Institute website, he discusses that topic in regards to restrictions and laws placed on the food industry. Some people are all for the government placing more regulations on food and requiring more detailed labeling on packaged foods, but others say the government has no right to tell us what to eat. Balko is arguing the side that believes the government does not have the right to decide what we eat, which is not surprising because he is a “self-described libertarian”.…

In his essay, “What You Eat is Your Business” Radley Balko asserts that it is not the government’s responsibility what you put into your body. He calls for no regulation on the fast food industry, declaring it a personal responsibility issue. Balko claims that the best method of reducing the obesity problem is removing it from the public sector, and making it a personal problem. However, I believe that he is oversimplifying an issue which he does not fully understand. I also believe that he is mistaking regulation of industry and informing consumers of what they are eating for socialized medicine.…

SevagInjean Dr. Christina Nagao English 1A 5 October, 2016 Watch What You Eat In “What You Eat is Your Business,” Radley Balko argues that the individual is responsible for America’s obesity epidemic not the government. Balko explains that the government has attempted to help solve the battle on obesity, but their efforts have not been successful. With individual Americans’ becoming a matter of “public health” instead of simply a matter of individual responsibility, Balko argues that America’s health care system is moving towards socialism and that people are becoming more responsible for others’ health and less responsible for their own health. For example, laws have been passed that require some people to pay for others’ medicine.…

The bunny shaped marshmallow candies known as Peeps helped save my life. After consuming them in handfuls one afternoon as a nine-year-old, the excessive urinating and drinking I had been experiencing the previous weeks returned with a vengeance. Realizing something to be amiss, my mother drove us to the nearest medical clinic. A nurse eventually pricked my finger to test my blood and revealed a glucose level above 700 mg/dl. After receiving my first insulin shot, she explained that a normal glucose reading should be between 80-120 mg/dl and that as a new Type 1 diabetic, I would need to make fundamental lifestyle changes.…

In the article, “My enemy’s enemy is my friend” it talks about a case study done at the University of Texas by two people of the name Elliot Arson and Vernon Cope to test a hypothesis that people will like people who dislike the same person as them, or like someone if they like the same people as them. This runs off of the theory that some people may believe that because they share the liking or disliking of someone that they are similar people with the same values and beliefs, this can be derived from the balance theory. When considered, this hypothesis is easily thought of to be accurate. With this hypothesis, there can be many other hidden factors that can play into these situations.…

The relationship between the Operations Process and the Troop Leading Procedures exist in a symbiotic and mutually necessary system. This system allows leaders to plan, prepare for, and react to various missions and situations in a fluid and organized fashion. As situations develop on a global scale, our national leaders continually develop the policy and precedent that drives the Troop Leading Procedures that lower level leadership is responsible for. Once higher level leadership passes down orders through the Operations Process, actions are taken in the field and in support of maneuvers by lower level leaders and their troops. These smaller units, in turn, gather intelligence and detailed knowledge of the environment and pass this information…
