Servant Leadership Report

My group consisted of fellow classmates Jake Geiger, Kay Saguiped, Colton Woyak, and Chase Lundry. For our chosen service project, our group decided to team up with the Carroll Student Veterans Organization (CSVO) in order to help create, develop, and implement a veteran focused service project. After much brainstorming and decision making, our group and the CSVO decided to do a banner/holiday card event during the week of Veterans Day (November 9-13). At this event, members from our group, the CSVO, as well as the Carroll University Republicans would take shifts tabling an area where participants could sign a giant banner supporting our country’s veterans, to be hung in the Milwaukee VA Medical Center, as well as an area where they could …show more content…
One particular example of a correlation between the event and the content covered in our class, one that would probably be the most evident example, would be how this project connected with servant leadership. Servant leadership, as discussed by Peter Northouse (2013) in his book entitled Leadership Theory and Practice, has as one of its leadership behaviors “Creating Value for the Community”. One of the foundations Servant Leadership was built upon was the idea that leadership, great leadership, revolved around supporting, developing, and bettering the entire community (Northouse, 2013). This idea is strongly linked with one of the outcomes of Servant Leadership, which is to have an impact on society (Northouse, 2013). With our event, we as aspiring leaders attempted to reach outside our own community and positively effect a much larger community. We identified a group we thought needed to be supported, found a campus organization we could partner with, and achieved our goal of aiding that downtrodden …show more content…
According to Northouse (2013, p. 185), Transformational Leadership is a process by which a leader uses motivation to help followers accomplish more. It is my belief that our group experienced some form of Transformational Leadership because our results were seemingly the results one would expect from a group larger than ours (including the volunteers from CSVO). All members of our group had moments where they motivated one another and made sure things were going smoothly. In the end, our team would act more than the sum of its parts and have a greater impact on our targeted

It was a fun way to work as a team and accomplish a much-needed task in the community. This project bettered the lives of children in the Des Moines area that do not have much which, in return is more rewarding than a lot of accomplishments in life. Through this project I learned how to conduct a community service project if I wanted to one in the future. Simple delegation and time management is all that is needed to make a project like this successful. Knowing that we helped a small population with a small class, I can only imagine how many children a group at a hospital could help if they all worked…

At the beginning of an officer’s career there is usually a question that is asked that is related to why you would like to be an officer. Historically the answer is that they want to help people and serve their respective community. As you progress through the ranks and assume leadership roles, you quickly realize that your role is no longer to serve the members of the community; it is to also serve those that work directly for you. It is this realization that has directed me to a servant leadership philosophy that I utilize both outside of the organization as well as inside the organization.…

Thus, the primary support that we provided to individual clubs was assistance with their fundraising efforts. Through this engagement and by co-chairing two annual Eliminate 5k races in my home club, I gained valuable experience with fundraising and seeking corporate sponsors. Although project knowledge and passion were key elements of these fundraising efforts, the most valuable skills that I learned from these fundraisers were in speaking with people on a professional level, and learning to be confident in a setting where I was not always so sure of…

Our Enc1101 class partnered with the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy to form a service learning project to educate and encourage students at Miami Dade College North Campus to take part in this year’s election. The project was named Beyond the Ballot it was planned as a “speed-dating” party so we could share intimate conversations with the students in a way to not only educate them but to also interact with each other and hear their inputs on the various issues. When I first saw an overview of the service learning project in our syllabus I felt overwhelmed and terrified, I had tremendous doubts that our class may not succeed to complete the project correctly and on time. My uncertainties continued to grow when we had our class…

This desire to help others prompted me to volunteer for two years at UCLA hospital to help transport patients. Hospital patients often deal with severe pain and sometimes loneliness, and I knew that giving some of my time could improve their moods and outlooks.…

The Business Dictionary defines Transformational Leadership as a “Style of leadership in which the leader identifies the needed change, creates a vision to guide the change through inspiration, and executes the change with the commitment of the members of the group” (http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/transformational-leadership.html). This definition is consistent with that of leadership expert, James McGregor Burns who is attributed to have introduced the concept of transformational leadership in 1978 and defined it as a process where "leaders and their followers raise one another to higher levels of morality and motivation." (https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/transformational-leadership.htm). Similarly, Alexia Vernon (Forbes, August 2015) describes Transformational Leaders as “people who, irrespective of audience, possess the ability to create big shifts in their audiences’ thinking, which leads to big shifts in their behavior, which enables them to achieve extraordinary results.”…

Before I began this journey of going back to school to get my degree I did not know if I could do what was needed to finish. However, as I have gotten into my coursework and started to learn what it is to be a leader, there have been concepts and terms that I have clung on to. For instance, cultural diversity, conflict resolution, decision making, problems solving, quality, and now servant-leadership. I have been an IT professional for over twenty years, starting off as a pc technician that supported faculty and staff at OU with their computer issues at the College of Engineering. Then moving into a management role, providing direction to my team to continue to give customers excellent support, guidance, and knowledge to the rest of campus.…
