As a child I was always intellectually curious, musically inclined, athletically challenged, and hungry. About two years ago I decided that I wanted to deepen my love for learning, continue playing the violin, and snack on cheese curls religiously, but I also wanted to be considered an athlete. My dad took me to his Crossfit gym and I fell in love with the daily challenges, the loud music, and the community of individuals who love to laugh and crack jokes in the middle of a workout. I traded my floor length velvet skirt and crisp white orchestra concert shirt for fitted shorts and tank tops that would allow me to perform the fluid melody of Olympic lifts and gymnastics movements.

Working out has not transformed me into a protein chugging jock, but it has provided balance the side of me that sits at whole foods for hours doing homework, and the side that skips lunch to paint in the art room because life is about versatility. When my muscles feel tight and are as flexible as an avocado pit, I am reminded that hard work pays off and reaching outside one’s comfort zone opens the door for the discovery of new interests. I am no longer afraid of the stone boundaries that surrounded my comfort zone, instead I find great comfort when I am faced with the uncomfortable because just like Michael Scott said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t
