Working In Groups Research Paper

Working in groups can be a good thing. You get multiple points of view from several different people. Students get to work on their social skills. Teachers don't have to waste a whole week on one project. Sometimes, though, certain students do a larger share of the group's work, in order to achieve an amazing grade. Arguments develop and disrupt the entire class so that no one else can get their group project done. Some people goof off, not caring what the people in their group are telling them to do and they just ignore them. In group projects, multiple points of view from several different people can be shared. To be efficient, a group of people needs to be proficient and help out the group. Group projects, however, may take less time to complete than individual projects because there is more than one person in a group, which helps with time management. To finish an essay that is two pages long in one day takes way too much time for just one individual to do. It would take less time to write a two-page essay if you were in a group working together to complete the paper. When working in groups it is inevitable that there will be at least one person in a group that is doing a larger share of the work. It would be unpleasant if that one person is you and you are the hardest worker in that group and no one else is helping with the project. For you to do most of the work for the group and everyone say that they helped wouldn't make you feel very good. Of course, if they are your friends then you wouldn't want to tell the teacher that you did most of the work and get all of your friends in trouble. Arguments usually develop when working in groups. Arguments lead to distractions in the classroom. People around the argument wouldn't be able to focus on their group work. If people can't focus on their group work then they most likely won't get a good grade on the project. Focusing on your project while there is an argument going on is very tough to do, especially if you are right behind

Dweck talks about how group failure isn’t acceptable, you have to learn from your mistakes. Going back to my high school years, there was a major point where I would stress myself over the school work. I was taking 9 periods at that time I wouldn’t get out until 9, so when I would get home I didn’t have time to really work on anything. The night classes I was taking were CNA classes which took a lot out of me because I had packets to do that were due the next day, on top of that I had my other school work. All my teachers including my mom noticed that I needed support so they were there encouraging me to never give up until the objective was done, until I felt like it was enough.…

When the students were working on the laptops they seemed very involved in learning the content. This is hard to find in math, but working on the computers brought in the students interest in the material. Working in a group is also beneficial because if one student is confused, another student could be able to help explain what to do and how to perform the math problem. Sometimes it is good to put students in groups because it is important to hear different ideas that can help spark the understanding of the content. Working in groups also helps form the sense of a community in the classroom.…

We formed the group of four people promptly and waited for the topic to be assigned. The topic was assigned in week 9, while in other courses we knew all our topics for group assignments from week 3. Not only the topic for group project was assigned late, but I never had a chance to see the marking rubric and, therefore, to know the instructor’s expectations about my work. Despite the tight deadlines, our group equally divided the workload among four people and started to research the literature about the topic.…

When a teacher has group assignments, I typically want to work alone. Because I believe being independent is essential in life and people shouldn’t always rely on others. We rely too much on others especially in school during group work. School is supposed to teach us many things but it sometimes doesn’t do a well enough job about teaching independence.…

I faced the internal struggle of being a good group member and being a good student. I struggled with communicating the urgency of completing the project to the rest of the group and not annoying everyone on the group chat. In the end, this challenge was solved by my fellow group members completing (thankfully and barely) before the deadline. If I could do the project over I would be less passive aggressive and talk to my group members about completing the work together to get it done earlier. Looking past all of my complaints and challenges this group assignment proved to be helpful and educational.…

During and after the group project I got a better understanding of NAVAL and a better understanding of my group. For example, Lexi is the leader of the group and Camille is the worker bee meaning that she is the one to go to for the information about the presentation. There were many high points in the group such as when we completed are power point early and when we researched the information. I had a blast working with them. A low point was when the video couldn’t load and we had to start from scratch again.…

From that time, I knew that writing collaboratively with group help us lots in different ways. When we work in a group, each person has different ideas, and knowledge. All group members share their knowledge or skills, that time we are able to make a project good. If we divide the group and divide work per each person, it will save our time and we become able to…

In our international business and information management module, my group and I had some difficulties with some of our group members. We had to choose a company and do the research about different aspects of it, we decided what company we want to choose and one of our group members disagreed because he thought it would be too hard to find the information. Nevertheless, we tried to handle the situation, because if one member of the group disagrees we have to discuss it and find a solution. We asked what company he suggest doing the presentation about, and he did not have any ideas, so we decided to stick to the company everyone else agreed to. In my opinion, it was the best solution to this problem, because if one person disagrees to do what everyone else decides to that, people need to provide arguments or other ideas that would be better to make a good presentation.…

In small groups there is a focus on “thinking” instead of just “getting an answer” (Cooke & Adams, 1998). “If student’s have to defend their solution to others in small groups…they will develop a better understanding of the mathematics and more confidence in their own ability to solve difficult problems” (1998). Part of the skill students are developing is their ability to convince another student that their ideas are valid (1998). Modeling and showing students what they should look and sound like when working in small groups is important. To help them with focusing, let students know what they should be saying when they are talking in their group, “I should hear words like equal, not equal.”…

When I recall teachers telling my class to expect a group project, groans and lists of complaints ensue from students. After the initial acknowledgement of the incoming group project, these students begin to worry about the identity of their inevitable partners who will impact which direction their grade will be headed for. Throughout my school experience, teachers have favorably chosen group projects as a method of assigning a great deal of work. Furthermore, these projects are a lesser load on teachers to grade and they hope other students will find a way to enlighten their fellow classmates. In the variety of groups I have taken a part of, many negatively impacted my grade for other group members’ actions.…

As I reflect on the semester, I am reminded of all the struggles and triumphs. The struggles consist of conflicting communication, work strategy, and time management styles within a group. The triumphs include how the group consistently managed to work together despite our many differences, and effectively complete each assignment, although the participation was not consistent. I feel that group based projects are better suited for the workplace, instead of higher education. My reasoning stems from the fact that online and on campus classes are comprised of young and older adults, which maintain different work ethics.…
