Working for a law enforcement agency whether you are a certified officers or a civilian supervisor. All personnel take an oath and have a duty to protect and serve. We as Americans tend hold law enforcement personnel higher standard because we hope they have the moral virtue to do what is right and lead by example to make a unit run efficiently. However, when a leader is a psychological egoist with a utilitarian view, many times he/she tips the scales of right and wrong in order to give their subordinates what they desire to make them happy, content and submissive. Even if this means allowing the subordinates are not following policies or protocols that the agency puts in place.

She feels that no one respects her and the attitude as a whole is concerning. “Supervisor X” agrees with “Supervisor Y”, and doesn’t understand why the subordinates are acting this way. The atmosphere with the shift is hateful with a constant power struggle between “Supervisor Y” and her subordinates. “Supervisor Y” is at her last straw and suggests a meeting with the shift over policy violations. With both Supervisor X and Y in the informal meeting, it does not go well, and ends in direct insubordination directed at “Supervisor Y”. “Supervisor Y” after the meeting types up a document of what occurred and sends it to her direct supervisor, and Supervisor X. When the subordinates are questioned about how they received the document they advised they were given the document by Supervisor X. When Supervisor X was questioned on how the subordinates got the document Supervisor X, he advised he had no knowledge of the dispatchers having the document directly lying to his Managers. The subordinates were called in as a group and Supervisor X was asked again. He again said the document didn’t come from him. The dispatchers felt betrayed and did not understand why “supervisor X” would …show more content…
If a leader takes it upon themselves to skew that line of breaking a minor rule what is to stop him/her from allowing a subordinates from breaking a major rule. That puts the liability on the agency and shift. Clearly from the example given “Supervisor X”, although he gave the impression that he would have the back of the subordinates when and if they got in trouble, saved himself as a psychological egoist would do. A leader is put in a position of power to ensure everyone is doing what they are supposed to do, if a person is following the policy put into place by the agency and an incident happens directly related to the policy, the employee as long as they are following protocol is less likely to get into trouble. In conclusion having a leader with no moral values and a psychological egoist with a utilitarian view, is detrimental to the moral and well-being of the

Summary The article Early Detection of the Problem Officer by Dino DeCrescenzo, starts off by mentioning how there is now an unfortunate pattern of problem police officers, even though police officers are now considered to be better educated and trained professionals than before. The article focuses primarily on databases, that according to the U.S. Department of Justice, are “designed to identify problematic behavior and allow early intervention to correct misconduct” (DeCrescenzo 2006). Early warning systems became popular since the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act passed, which gave the federal government power to investigate police officers who abused power.…
