Competency Statement: Emotional Literacy Support Assistant

How someone is treated in the workplace will impact on how professional they are in their job. While working at a previous educational setting I felt, although the school worked well, information was not shared well with every member of staff. good communication is, in my opinion, a key component to professionalism. You feel a more valued member of the team if information and decisions are shared with you. Although I understand not all information can be shared due to confidentiality, it is important that each member of staff knows what is happening around the setting. In my previous setting information was not shared readily with every member of staff. However, in my current setting there are weekly meetings for teachers and teaching assistants to keep everyone up to date with what is happening in and around the setting. The difference between the two settings is I feel a more valued member of the team in my current setting than I did in my previous setting. This has given me more responsibility in my role, meaning that I need to plan for different interventions with different children each day. This has increased my sense of autonomy, by having more responsibility I feel I have more motivation in my role. More responsibility also means greater rewards. Last year I had the responsibility of working one to one with a child. Although it was hard work, the reward I gained from it out weighed this. I was able to see this child flourish in the school and no longer need me as a one to one. The hard work and commitment I put into my role was worth it to get that reward. As working in a setting like this is all about helping children grow and learn.
