The book states that a person is defined as “someone who is capable of psychological and social interaction with others, capable of deciding on a course of action and being held responsible for that action.” In the book it explains that children were not considered real people until recently. Working with children on a daily basis I believe they are just as much of a person as an adult is. Seeing young adults and children that are not able to communicate or think on the same level as an average person does not make them any less of a person or not a person at all.
It is a common thought to look at a person and maybe even get scared of a person that looks different than us. A majority of our society look at mentally handicapped people and think they are aliens. Every child has a purpose and they can teach you a lot. Prior to working, I might have been more judgmental and not realized how special every person really is even with a diagnosis. One diagnosis that has made me a better person and realized what happiness really is, is Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome results from an extra or partial copy of chromosome 21. My favorite part about anyone with Down Syndrome, is that their heart is so much bigger and they laugh at jokes that might not even be funny, because they want to see everyone around them
