While working as a national service personnel at the Ministry of Water Resource, Works and Housing in Ghana, after my associate degree in Public Administration, I was fortunate to be involved in project management roles at the ministry. This gave me a fascinating insight into the challenges that confront project managers – risk management, contracts, project initiation, planning, financial management, socio-cultural effects on schedule control and environmental sustainability. In my experience, in almost all cases, the success or failure of most projects undertaken by the ministry depended largely on the personal involved in the project execution, particularly those at the top of the project management hierarchy. I admired and also took advantage of the time to learn from their expertise and professionalism in dealing with resources management, politico-cultural challenges and project deadlines. I was particularly fascinated about how the impact of cultural traditions of a people in a particular public projects. This admiration and desire to contribute have challenged me to seek more advanced credential in the field to enable me work to the fullest of my potential upon my return to Ghana. I am aware that this field is a challenging profession, which comes with huge/extensive responsibilities but has great prospects for fulfilled career.
My decision to choose NYU to pursue my graduate studies is born out of the rich content of professionally focus of its project management graduate program. I am of the strong conviction that by the end of my studies at NYU, I will acquire the analytical and evaluating skills and research capacities necessary to investigate and understand the underlying issues and competing interests that dictate decisions in public policy.
