Scenario 2: Topic: Worker Suffering From Alcoholism
You are a Human Resources supervisor of a small office with only five employees, although your company employs fifty people. Several people on your staff have complained that Cheryl is not doing her job because she is frequently late for work. Her behavior is moody and she is sometimes impatient with clients on the phone.
Cheryl, is the only office assistant on your staff. According to her job description, one of her essential duties is to answer the telephone and route calls. She also prepares documents on the computer for the other staff in the department. You have been responsible for evaluating her performance and she has received several poor performance evaluations for the past nine months. For example, one of Cheryl’s main duties is answering the telephone between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. No one else is available to answer the phones and, therefore, important business calls go unanswered.

Alcoholism is a disease in which individual developed an addiction to alcohol. According to Alcoholism in the Workplace, Alcohol dependence is defined as, “A primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychological, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It has characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortion in thinking, most notably denial” (“Alcoholism in the Workplace”). The article Alcoholism in the Workplace states that, “Alcoholism is the failure to control drinking because of both a physical and emotional dependence on alcohol” (Alcoholism in the Workplace).
