One of the issues that companies and HR professionals have to deal with today is the issue of paid time off as more employees desire to obtain a better work-life balance. One of the most common times for employees to need paid time off is after the birth or adoption of a child. While some companies provide a period of paid time off there is no federal law insuring that all new parents have time to spend caring for their new child.
The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 allows parents to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave without the threat of losing their job. If someone is happy with the company they work for, they will to be more likely to make more ethical decisions. “Research has attempted to address whether work-life balance contributes to job performance and employee well-being. Studies have evaluated ethical issues concerning implementation of work-life balance policies in the workplace (Frame & Hartog, 2003). Massive media attention focused on a study by Deloitte & Touche, a Big Four accounting firm, which showed a connection between work-life balance and ethical behavior (cf., Schurr, 2007; AFP, 2007; Meyer, 2007). According to this study, 91% of employees surveyed indicated that workers are more likely to act ethically if they have a good work-life balance. The chairman of the board at Deloitte & Touche, Sharon Allen, provides the following reason for the connection between ethics and work-life balance:
“If someone invests in all of their time and energy into their jobs for everything—including their sense of personal worth.
